The Big Data Lab @ ISC HPC 2025

Our team presented a project poster of an ongoing research project aiming to improve the robust roll-out of on-demand clusters at the ISC HPC in Hamburg on Wednesday, June 11th. We (Max Conzen, Oskar Galla & Marcel Remmy) had some in-depth talks with other research institutions and gained valuable insights and inspiration.

The project has been labeled HPC on-demand — Dynamic on-demand cluster – computing for SMEs on COTS computers. It provides a way to create repoducible, ad-hoc compute environments with minimized operational workload. The goal is to enable small to medium-sized enterprises to apply Data Science by reducing the investment cost of infrastructure upfront.

Personal session highlights at the ISC were:

  • BoF Democratizing AI Accelerators: Successes and Challenges
where vendors and researches presented the current state of acceleration hardware and the trajectory the industry is moving. The key take away for us was that with these cards it may be feasible to enable ai workloads in our worker nodes without GPUs and use this technology in student training.
  • BoF Agriculture Empowered by Supercomputing
this session was inspiring as it focussed on the challenges of bringing research to the farmers, literally deploying it to the field. The overall subject was to put the farmer´s data in their own hands and enable them to share the data and devices for increase usefulness.
This is a topic we face similarly in current research projects where deploying ai based solutions to the factory floors of SMEs.
  • BoF HPC and You v5.0
that session focussed on enjoying career and community in HPC from a students perspective. there are a few venues that provide Master´s degrees in HPC administration but there is still room for improvement and to inspiring young talent for this trade.

Considering the fact that only a few universities of applied sciences had been selected to present in the poster reception, we feel honored to have that opportunity.

We will continue our work on the project and hope to show the progress on the next ISC.
Until then check out the current project poster.
